First off, what exactly IS a bio?

What is a Bio?

Your bio is any spot where you are telling people who you are and what you do.

On your website, there is generally an “About me” tab, where you give some information about yourself.

On your social media pages, there is often an “About” section where you can put different blurbs about yourself and what you do. Some social media platforms have pretty dramatic character limits – for example, on Instagram you are limited to 150 characters in your bio. So you often have to get creative to have the impact you desire!

What needs to be included in your Bio?

A great bio has a few main components. (But, spoiler alert – don’t stop reading in THIS section, because there are TIPS for writing these components below!)

#1 – Tell who you are. (Including a photo if you can!)

#2 – Tell who it is that you/ your business serve.

#3 – State what your customers’ problems are.

#4 – Tell how you/your business solve those problems for your customer.

#5 – State how people can get involved with you/ your business.

Tips for writing a compelling Bio.

When you are writing, your words and tone MUST be conversational. This is not the place to list your resume details or to use business jargon.

There will be REAL, actual people reading your bio. So use words that real, actual people would use.

This is a place where some people turn into a “deer in headlights” when they are writing, not sure of what to write. Remember, in the end, your goal here is to CONNECT with people. Most people will not connect through a dry list of accomplishments, or vocabulary that is exclusive to your field. Just be conversational and pretend you are writing to an actual person.

Just like with social media as a whole, the reason people are there is to CONNECT. They are on social media to connect with their family and friends, and even to connect with brands and businesses that they love.

We already know that the more personality and conversation you inject into your social media posts, the better. So let’s carry that same thinking into your bio section.

This is something that can seem unnatural at first, but once you master this – it makes ALL the difference: Everything you write should be focused on your customers and what they want or need (even if you are writing about yourself!)

For example, instead of writing:

“Our real estate company sells homes for top dollar.”

Write this instead:

“Many first-time home buyers are nervous about the process. We are committed to being with you, holding your hand from beginning to end.”

In that way, you’ve stated that you sell homes, but you’ve done it through the lens of what your customers want and need. You have stated how you solve their problem – by being there for them throughout the process.

Also, it’s ok to brag a little bit! People want to KNOW that you can solve their problems and get them the results they are looking for.

So list a couple of accomplishments, and assure them that you can do the same for them.

Other ways to use your Bio.

Now that you have crafted a compelling bio that explains who you are, what you do – and says it all in a way that makes people want to work with you – you can use this work in several other places as well!

Don’t we all love it when we can use the same work over and over in other places?? (It’s like batching!)

If you have a speaking gig, this blurb is perfect for the program notes. If you have a sales page for anything, you often need to use this brief bio about yourself, so that people know who they are buying from.

In fact, anytime you are in a conversation and someone asks, “What do YOU do?” you now have a compelling answer all prepared!

Use this bio, not only in print, but conversationally! As silly as you may feel, practice speaking the bio in your own conversational way.

This way you are prepared for any conversation that may come your way!
